Back in May, my poem, Outside, was selected as part of the Art in the Underbelly Exhibition in association with Popshot.  14 poems were illustrated by 14 different artists and all displayed alongside eachother at the AITU space in Norfolk.  It was also featured as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival visual arts programme.

Unfortunately, for technical reasons, I was unable to share this at the time, but am delighted to be able to share this with you now.

Tommy Perman created a beautiful illustration for my poem, and will also be displaying it, along with my poem, at an exhibition of his work at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh in December.  More information on that can be found here.

Here is the poem, and the illustration.

Outside, Tommy Perman (.pdf download)

Outside, she stoops to pick up milk.
The street stands still. Holds breath.

New. The air is clear, receptive
and poised to listen to birds

playing flutes from telegraph poles
lined on wires, meandering melodies

with a stutter, sudden wavers
new and unsure.

Outside. She’s missed its’ airs,
its’ subtle fidgeting

the brushing of skins. Kissings.
Even greys of spring daylight

cause eyes to squint, retract.
How easy to become unaccustomed.

Uneasy. The stillness exaggerates
and draws sharp, turns familiar

to foreign over nights.

Quick catch up!

I’ve been really busy over the summer working on lots of new writing and it’s been great to be producing again! I’m hoping there will be a few little things coming to fruition in the next few months so keep looking out for updates!

This summer has been really productive, with plenty of highlights, so here’s just a few…

I’ve been really pleased to be a part of Elbow Room‘s first volume and blog. This weekend, it’s at the London Art Fair at the Whitechapel Gallery, so if you’re around, go check it out!

I’ve also had a little poem featured as part of the London Lit Project. It’s a great project, especially if you have any sort of link to London, and I thoroughly recommend you go and browse through some of the lovely moments recorded there.

South Bank Poetry also published a poem from me in their summer edition (issue 13). The same poem will also be featured as part of the Subversive Image Exhibition later in the year. Watch the space!

Coming up, I have a new poem in the latest edition of Popshot Magazine. I am delighted to be a part of this again this year (having also had a poem in their April edition) and am really looking forward to seeing what the illustrator makes of my words. Issue 8 of Popshot is out 1st October.

Right now, I’m taking a couple of weeks off (well, sort of) but plan to get back to writing poems soon. In the mean time, I’m enjoying taking the camera out, doing little bits of painting and writing a little bit of fiction—all with varying degrees of success!

Anyway, that’s enough from me!  Keep looking out for updates every now and then.  Until next time…
